Happy Birthday Marines!
249 years…
Happy Birthday Marines.
Today, November 10, marks the 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps (USMC), the nation’s third-oldest branch of the military.
With a storied history that dates back before the birth of the United States itself, the Marine Corps’ legacy is deeply interwoven with the story of American freedom, resilience, and global influence.
The USMC was established on November 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution calling for “two Battalions of Marines be raised” to serve as a landing force for the colonies’ nascent naval fleet.
This pivotal decision came just eight months before the Declaration of Independence, embedding the Corps in the very foundation of the nation’s military endeavors.
Although the Marine Corps, like the Navy, was disbanded following the Revolutionary War, it was re-established in 1798, laying the groundwork for continuous service that has endured for over two centuries.
Throughout its history, the Marine Corps has been known for its tenacity, adaptability, and fierce loyalty—principles that have defined its role as the “first to fight” in conflicts across the globe.
In the post-World War II era, the Marine Corps has participated in several large-scale deployments that highlighted the sacrifices and valor of its members.
Over 150,000 Marines served during the Korean War, demonstrating extraordinary courage in battles such as the Chosin Reservoir.
In Vietnam, Marine forces peaked at 85,000 in 1968, bearing witness to some of the most intense combat operations of the conflict.
The Gulf War saw 92,000 Marines participate in Operation Desert Shield from 1990 to 1991, showcasing their readiness and swift execution in a modern battlefield.
The Global War on Terror brought further challenges, including the 2003 deployment of 76,000 Marines to Iraq.
The Corps’ most recent major engagement, the battle for Fallujah, remains a poignant chapter in its history. This battle, which occurred 20 years ago, saw Marines playing a leading role in one of the most grueling and high-stakes urban combat operations in modern military history.
Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Eric M. Smith acknowledged the connection between this pivotal battle and the Corps’ enduring legacy in his birthday message, reflecting on the sacrifices made and the unyielding spirit that continues to define the Marines today.
Semper Fidelis — Always Faithful
As the USMC celebrates its 249th birthday, it remains an icon of discipline, bravery, and unwavering commitment to service.
This occasion not only honors the Marines of today but also pays homage to the generations who have contributed to building and sustaining its formidable reputation. Looking forward, the Corps continues to adapt to new challenges, reinforcing its readiness for future conflicts and maintaining its dedication to the nation.
The Marine Corps’ motto—“Semper Fidelis,” meaning “Always Faithful”—is more than just a phrase; it is a way of life that binds past, present, and future Marines in a shared commitment to defend freedom and uphold the highest standards of service.
From the hallowed sands of Iwo Jima to the streets of Fallujah, the Marines have shown that their legacy is built not just on victories but on the values they embody, ensuring that their story will continue for generations to come.
